Program Name
Oregon Lighthouses (Activity # 998)
Description
When retired history professor Dr. Doug Kroll first shared his knowledge of Oregon's Lighthouses, he only talked about the lighthouses on the Oregon Coast. Since then, doing further research he discovered there were more federal lighthouses - which were not on the coast. He will include them in this revised ZOOM presentation. Dr. Kroll will share fascinating stories of all these lighthouses in Oregon, which were built on prominent headlands on Coast, near major estuaries and along the Columbia River to guide mariners as they brought people and goods to Oregon and helped commercial fisherman. Lighthouses are one of the more romanticized subjects in the history of this and other nations. The dutiful and solitary life of a lighthouse keeper has long been a source of fascination for writers and filmmakers. They have been called “America’s castles” and remain popular tourist attractions. These structures, with their simple functional beauty, have come to hold a firm place in hearts of many Americans---symbols of stability, both in their strength against the weather and in the loyal dependability of their keepers. Learn which Oregon lighthouse is the shortest, the tallest, the oldest, the most difficult to build, the only one that has never been deactivated, as well as which one some believe is most beautiful or the one some consider the most noteworthy, and more.
