Program Name
Germany in the Abyss (Activity # 1362)
Description
Instructor Brad Tolliver. The traumatic events in Germany at the end of World War II are largely unknown to the American and, and even, to the German public. This course will relate in word and picture an objective and frank manner not only the near complete physical destruction of a nation, but also the damage to the psyche of the German people. This period chastened a nation once known for its contributions to art, philosophy, music, and the sciences. These two years also had a detrimental effect upon the righteous cause of the Allies in their efforts to end Naziism. Mistakes made by the Allies in the fury of war led to consequences that are regrettable. This period has been made more relevant today by the armed conflicts that are, at the time of this writing, still raging in Eastern Europe and in Palestine. The lessons learned in 1944-45 have, unfortunately, been forgotten and the world faces those same dilemmas today: how do civilized nations handle the hatred and desire for retribution that arise from war.
